Collect First Day Covers Issued On Your Birthday

Miriam and I both have stamps that where issued on the day we were born. Miriam was born 4/29/64 and collects every cachet of the John Muir issue. She’s been at it for years and has a really nice collection and enjoys the hunt for covers she doesn’t already have. Pictured is a Dorothy Knapp add-on for her issue that she is pretty desperate for. The image came to me as I am writing a book on Dorothy and one of my clients owns this cover. Miriam was in my office one day as I was working on the book and happened to see the image. She would have seen it someday but I was immediately charged with finding her another!

My issue, somewhat appropriately given my profession, is the City Mail Delivery stamp of 10/26/63. I don’t collect it. Collectors make terrible dealers. This is a great way, however, to create a nice FDC collection of your own. Even if you don’t have one on the exact day you were born, you can collect the right day and month from various years. You could even search for postal history from your birthday.

About

Weisz Stamps & Covers is one of the largest full-time professional specialists in this area of philately. “Covers” are most simply an envelope that has been through the mail. They have been called covers since before there were envelopes because they “covered” the letter inside with a folded piece of paper sealed by wax. There are hundreds of specialties and areas of this collecting area. Some covers were expressly created for collectors and these are called “philatelic covers”. The others are our daily mail dating back to the 1700s and this is “commercial mail” or “postal history”. Since mail touches all our lives and in different ways, there are more reasons and ways to collect postal history than anyone could imagine. Collect your favorite country, mail from the town or county that you grew up in or mail that relates to a famous idol. Collect topical interests like sports, animals, architecture, advertising or food. There are hundreds of fascinating covers that tell your story. We service thousands of customers through the 20 to 25 stamp shows we travel to every year.

We’re also happy to fill your want list via email or snail mail, and send scans and approvals to many of our clients. Since 1960 our family has been trusted members of the philatelic community. We are dealers in good standing with both the American Philatelic Society (APS) and the American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA). We have spent millions of dollars and are always looking for more material to keep our inventory fresh. Please call before sending any material on approval.
